Lib Dems mislead again! We in Guildford are quite familiar with the Liberal Democrat tactic |

of deliberately spreading misinformation, especially at election time. Both the Labour and Conservative Parties have similar problems in other parts of the country. |

By-election campaign tricks The recent Holy Trinity by-election was marred by a controversial Liberal Democrat leaflet, printed in Tory blue to make it appear to be an official Conservative leaflet (left). The political party imprint, required on all election literature to show the originator, was in minute type in the bottom corner. This was a clear attempt to influence the voters by deception. Labour candidate Martin Phillips, said, "I heard a lot of people complaining about it, it's was a clear attempt to deceive. I work in advertising, if that was an advert it would not be allowed to go through." |

"The Liberal Democrats knew they were going to lose, they did this out of desperation." The Conservatives are well aware of the Liberal Democrat's doubtful practices. The winning Conservative commented, "I would say it' s similar to other things they have run" |

Lib
Dems want action on noise - DON'T WE ALL? |

A3 with the fact that the area was held by the Lib Dems on the Borough Council. By implication, it appeared to be them that had made it happen. They claimed that the Highways Agency was unable to afford a barrier through the whole of Guildford. Sue Doughty reported that she had "raised the issue on a number of occasions with the Transport Minister and have been shocked by their dismissive attitude." |

| FACT:
The West Guildford A3 noise barrier was solely the result of a Guildford
Labour Party initiative.
The Lib Dems contributed NOTHING - they did NOTHING. |

| Labour
has campaigned since 1999/2000, ever since the council produced a report
on A3 noise. We have talked to successive Transport Ministers and the Highways Agency on many occasions. |

Former Labour Councillor Joan O'Byrne started a campaign in Westborough Ward to gather local support. We conducted a HUGE survey of ALL residents living within 500 meters of the A3 in Burpham, Stoke and Westborough wards which received a huge response (30%). We asked the Highways Agency for noise barriers, for low noise asphalt and a reduction of speed limits. So far our persistence has achieved the noise barrier. IF THE LIB DEMS HAD REALLY BEEN INVOLVED AT ALL THEY WOULD KNOW WHY THE FENCE WAS NOT EXTENDED ANY FURTHER. It was the intention of the Highways Agency from the start to test the effectiveness of the barrier, it was not simply a cost issue. |
