The
panel looking at Fair Access to the Professions published its report last
month entitled "Unleashing
Aspiration". Local Labour Parliamentary Candidates, Tim Shand (Guildford)
and Jonathan Slater (Aldershot) look at how far it has helped young people
to reach their full potential and what more needs to be done. |

The
appalling state of Guildford's roads Tell that to the residents of Cedar Way on Bellfields. We reckon their road has the worst potholes of any we have seen in Guildford so far. Tim Shand emphasises its dreadful state in the picture. |

Where is the most potholed road in Guildford? If you know a road that is like the one in the photo or worse then let us know. Please send me the details, with or without a photo. |

| In spite of the many failures of the Tories at County Hall, they were re-elected with an increased majority in June. So it might appear that no one really cares about the state of the roads. The truth is that it is the wealthy rural Tories that keep them in power and it is clear that they don't care at about the conditions under which the less well-off live in the town. It is a foretaste of what a Tory government would be like - looking after the few not the many. | ||||||

Parliamentary Candidates - |

The expenses scandal brings suspicion on all those who seek to represent their political parties. As a measure of our intention to try and restore an element of trust between voters and political representatives ahead of the general election, as Prospective Parliamentary Candidates we would like to put on record the following five pledges which will govern our conduct if we are elected to Parliament. A great many of our current Members of Parliament already embody these principles in their day-to-day conduct and their example should be recognised. We would not like to return to a system where only those who are already independently wealthy can put themselves forward for election to Parliament, so necessary reforms to the system of MPs’ expenses and allowances should acknowledge the legitimate need for those representing constituencies outside Greater London to claim for appropriate accommodation and travel expenses. In the absence, however, of a decision on the final form of the new system, these pledges will act as our guide if we have the honour of being elected to the House of Commons. |
